Portable Oxygen Concentrator
When To Order:
- Portable Oxygen Concentrators designed for continuous use should be considered for individuals with early-stage respiratory conditions.
Medical Documentation:
The clinical care team needs to document in the individual’s medical record the following:
- A respiratory medical condition.
- Oxygen saturation of 88% or less when the individual is at rest on room air.
- The individual’s provider (MD, DO, NP or PA) must complete a written order.
Selecting Equipment:
The following considerations impact the selection of equipment:
- Portable Oxygen Concentrators are most appropriate for patients with a low liter flow requirement.
- Portable Oxygen Concentrators should be considered as part of an early intervention respiratory program.
- Low oxygen saturation levels often prevent individuals from fully participating in activities of daily living.
